At first, this seems like a strange question. We know that pure sodium metal reacts very rapidly with water and can produce fire or even an explosive effect. But seawater contains a large amount of sodium. So why doesn’t the ocean constantly explode?
The answer lies in the chemical form of sodium.
⚠️ What happens when pure sodium meets water?
Pure sodium is a highly reactive metal. When it comes into contact with water, a chemical reaction occurs:

This reaction produces:
* Sodium hydroxide (NaOH)
* Hydrogen gas (H₂)
* A significant amount of heat
The heat can ignite the hydrogen gas, and under suitable conditions, this can produce an explosion-like reaction.
