A common question is: If a baby is surrounded by fluid inside the motherâs womb, why doesnât the baby drown?
The answer is that a baby in the womb does not breathe air through its lungs in the same way a newborn does.
đ¶ The Baby Is Surrounded by Amniotic Fluid
During pregnancy, the baby develops inside the uterus and is surrounded by amniotic fluid. This fluid protects the baby, allows movement, and helps support normal development.
Although the baby can make breathing-like movements, its lungs are not being used to obtain oxygen from the surrounding fluid.

Before birth, the babyâs oxygen supply comes from the mother through the placenta.
Oxygen passes from the motherâs blood across the placenta into the babyâs blood. The oxygen-rich blood then travels to the baby through the umbilical cord.
The motherâs and babyâs blood normally do not mix directly; the placenta acts as an exchange organ between them.

Before birth, the babyâs lungs are filled with fluid and are still developing. They are not functioning as air-breathing organs yet.
The babyâs circulation is also specially adapted to life inside the womb, allowing oxygen received from the placenta to reach important organs.

Everything changes when the baby is born.
After delivery, the baby takes its first breaths. The lungs begin filling with air, and blood flow through the lungs increases. The umbilical cord is then no longer the babyâs source of oxygen.

A baby does not drown in the womb because it is not dependent on breathing air through its lungs before birth. Its oxygen and nutrient supply comes primarily through the placenta and umbilical cord.
