🩸 Why Do Humans Have So Few Blood Groups? Are These the Only Ones Found Worldwide?

When we learn that humans only have 8 main blood groups, it’s natural to wonder — Why are there so few? And more importantly, are these the only blood types found in the entire world?

Let’s explore the answer in a simple and clear way.



🧬 1. How Are Blood Groups Formed?

A person’s blood group is determined by their genetic makeup (DNA), which they inherit from their parents.

There are two main systems that define a human’s blood group:

➤ ABO System
• This system is based on three genes (alleles): A, B, and O
• These combine to form four main blood types:
👉 A, B, AB, O

➤ Rh Factor System
• This adds another layer: Positive ( ) or Negative (−)
• Every ABO group can be either Rh positive or negative

👉 This gives us 8 major blood groups:
A , A−, B , B−, AB , AB−, O , O−



🌍 2. Are These the Only Blood Groups Found Worldwide?

Yes, for the vast majority of people (over 99.99 percent ), their blood group fits into these 8 main categories.

But — there are a few extremely rare blood groups that do not fall neatly into this system.



🧪 3. What Are Some Rare Blood Groups?

🧬 1. Bombay Blood Group (hh)
• First discovered in Mumbai (Bombay) in 1952
• Extremely rare — found in 1 out of every 10,000 people in India (rarer elsewhere)
• People with this blood type cannot receive blood from A, B, AB, or O types
• They can only receive from another Bombay blood group person

🧬 2. Rh-null Blood Group (“Golden Blood”)
• The rarest blood group in the world
• Red blood cells have no Rh antigens at all
• Only fewer than 50 people globally are known to have it
• Called “Golden Blood” because it can be given to anyone with rare Rh deficiencies, but people who have it can only receive from other Rh-null donors

🧬 3. Other Rare Groups

There are other rare antigen systems like:
• Kell
• Duffy
• Kidd
• Diego, etc.

These occur only in specific populations or ethnic groups.



🔬 4. So Is Everyone’s Blood the Same Within These Groups?

Not at all.
While most people fall into the 8 main blood groups, every person’s blood is genetically unique.

Why?
• Because red blood cells have hundreds of other surface proteins (antigens) beyond just ABO and Rh
• That’s why cross-matching is often done before blood transfusions, even if the blood group matches
