Where is India's drug problem most serious in 2026?
1. Punjab/Chandigarh belt → particularly serious opioid/heroin addiction
2. Northeast India → particularly serious opioid/heroin and cross-border trafficking
3. Major metros such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad → increasingly serious synthetic drugs, cocaine, MDMA/mephedrone and recreational drugs
What the newest 2024 data tells us
At the state level, the 2024 NDPS case numbers are striking:
Kerala — 27,149
Maharashtra — 15,641
Tamil Nadu — 11,037
Punjab — 8,973
Madhya Pradesh — 4,460
Rajasthan — 5,246
Uttar Pradesh — 5,941
Karnataka — 4,165
Assam — 3,335
Haryana — 3,325
Delhi — 1,789
These are police-registered NDPS cases, not numbers of addicted people. A high number can reflect stronger policing, reporting, trafficking activity or population size rather than a higher addiction rate
