What if you could stop a desert from spreading… by planting billions of trees? 🌳🏜️
China’s Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program (TNSP)—often called the “Great Green Wall of China”—is one of the largest and longest-running ecological restoration projects on Earth.
Launched in 1978, the 73-year project stretches across northern China, targeting desertification, wind erosion and devastating dust storms. The program covers around 4.06 million km² across the country’s northern regions and is scheduled to continue until 2050.
The goal isn’t simply to plant trees. Modern phases increasingly focus on drought-resistant species, vegetation suited to local ecosystems, soil stabilization and scientifically managing water resources.
And this is what the fight against desertification can look like on the ground: one struggling patch of sand, one plant, and one restoration project at a time.
