🇺🇸 U.S. National Debt Reaches Record Level, Huge Burden Per Citizen

Washington: United States, the world’s largest economy, is currently facing an enormous national debt burden. The total U.S. government debt has climbed to nearly $39 trillion, making it the largest sovereign debt in the world.

According to estimates, if the debt is divided across the country’s population of around 350 million people, the average debt burden per citizen becomes:

That equals roughly $111,000 per person.

The U.S. government borrows heavily to fund:

* Military and defense spending
* Social Security programs
* Medicare and healthcare
* Infrastructure projects
* Government welfare programs
* Interest payments on previous debt

Reports suggest the U.S. is now spending nearly $1 trillion annually just on interest payments. Economists warn that the continuously rising debt could put long-term pressure on the American economy and the stability of the U.S. dollar.

The United States gets its debt financing mainly by selling U.S. Treasury Bonds, Treasury Notes, and Treasury Bills. When people or institutions buy these securities, they are essentially lending money to the U.S. government.

Major lenders to United States include:

1. American citizens and investors
* Banks
* Pension funds
* Insurance companies
* Mutual funds
2. The Federal Reserve
The U.S. central bank also buys government bonds and provides liquidity to the system.
3. Foreign countries
Many countries invest their dollar reserves in U.S. Treasury bonds, including:
* Japan
* China
* United Kingdom
4. Global investors and corporations
International investors often consider U.S. government bonds one of the safest financial assets in the world.

Why can the U.S. borrow so much easily?

* The U.S. dollar is the world’s main reserve currency.
* The American economy is extremely large.
* U.S. Treasury bonds are widely viewed as relatively safe investments.
* Much of global trade is conducted in dollars.

The U.S. government sells bonds → investors and countries buy them → the government promises to repay the money later with interest.
