The Science Behind the Floating Water Bridge
When two beakers containing highly purified, deionized water are placed close together and a very high voltage—typically around 15,000–25,000 volts—is applied, an unusual phenomenon called the floating water bridge can occur.
The strong electric field polarizes the water molecules and helps maintain a continuous column of water between the two containers. This creates a self-supporting cylindrical bridge of water that appears to hang in mid-air.
Importantly, the electrical field does not simply “cancel gravity.” The bridge is sustained by a combination of electrohydrodynamic forces, surface tension, and the properties of the polarized water.
The controls shown in the video are adjusting the electrical voltage, not the audio frequency. Changing the voltage changes the electric field and can affect the stability and dimensions of the water bridge.
