The Parker Solar Probe is a NASA mission launched on August 12, 2018, to study the Sun up close. It’s the first spacecraft to fly into the Sun’s corona, the outermost part of its atmosphere, reaching within 3.83 million miles of the solar surface during its closest approaches (perihelia). Designed to withstand extreme temperatures (up to 1,400°C or 2,500°F), it uses a 4.5-inch-thick carbon-composite heat shield. The mission has set records as the fastest human-made object and the closest to the Sun. It uses Venus flybys for gravity assists to tighten its orbit.
