The Mediterranean Sea, Saltwater and the Future of AI Data Centres

The Mediterranean Sea is one of the world’s major seas, and its water is salty. Its average salinity is around 38 parts per thousand (‰), meaning that roughly 38 grams of dissolved salts are present in one litre of seawater.

But this raises an important question: If seawater is salty, can it still be used for AI data centres and large-scale technology infrastructure?

💧 AI and the Growing Demand for Water

Large AI data centres contain thousands of GPUs and other computing systems that operate continuously. These machines generate substantial amounts of heat, requiring sophisticated cooling systems to keep them operating safely and efficiently.

Water can play an important role in some cooling systems. For data centres located near the sea, seawater could potentially serve as a cooling resource. However, seawater cannot simply be used in ordinary cooling systems because its salt content can cause corrosion, mineral deposits and other technical problems.

🌊 Desalination: Turning Seawater into Freshwater

One possible solution is desalination. Technologies such as reverse osmosis can remove most dissolved salts and other impurities from seawater.

Desalinated water can then potentially be used for industrial processes, cooling and other applications. However, desalination itself requires significant energy, infrastructure and careful management of the concentrated brine produced during the process.

🤖 Why Coastal Locations Could Matter for AI Infrastructure

As AI expands, the demand for computing power, electricity and cooling infrastructure is also expected to grow. Coastal locations may offer potential advantages because they provide access to seawater and could support desalination and other water-management infrastructure.

However, the fact that an area is located beside the Mediterranean Sea does not prove that it is intended for an AI hub or data-centre development.

In particular, there is currently no established evidence that Gaza was destroyed specifically to build an Israeli AI hub. Such a claim would require credible documents, official plans or independent evidence.

🔍 The Bigger Question

The future AI race may not be only about advanced chips and computing power. It could also involve electricity, cooling systems, water resources and access to infrastructure.

The Mediterranean’s salty water cannot simply be consumed or used everywhere without treatment. But with modern desalination and water-treatment technologies, seawater can become a usable resource for certain industrial purposes.

As AI infrastructure expands, one question may become increasingly important:

Will the next AI race be fought not only over computing power, but also over energy and water?
