Smoking May Increase Infertility Risk in Women: WHO Review Highlights Reproductive Health Concerns

A new review by the World Health Organization (WHO) highlights concerns about the impact of tobacco smoke exposure on women’s reproductive health. According to the review, women who smoke may face approximately 1.4 times higher risk of infertility compared with women who do not smoke.

The concern is not limited to active smoking. Second-hand smoke, which occurs when a person inhales tobacco smoke produced by someone else, may also affect reproductive health. This is particularly relevant for women who regularly live or work around smokers.

The review also highlights potential reproductive-health concerns associated with e-cigarettes and waterpipes (hookah/shisha). Although these products differ from conventional cigarettes, their use can still expose the body to potentially harmful chemicals and substances.

Infertility can have many causes, including age, hormonal problems, reproductive disorders, certain medical conditions and lifestyle factors. Therefore, smoking should be considered one possible risk factor rather than the sole cause of infertility.

The findings underline the importance of reducing exposure to tobacco smoke and protecting reproductive health. Avoiding smoking and second-hand smoke can be an important part of maintaining overall health and may help reduce preventable reproductive-health risks.
