Sir Albert Howard (1873-1947) was an English agricultural scientist who is widely considered as the founder of modern organic agriculture. He spent much of his life in India, experimenting with composting and natural fertilizers, and developing methods to regenerate soil fertility and biodiversity in the face of erosion and degradation. He believed that healthy soils lead to healthy plants, animals, and humans, and that artificial chemicals and mechanization would only lead to the destruction of ecosystems and the impoverishment of farmers. His ideas inspired the creation of the Soil Association and influenced many organic farmers around the world.
