Political Row Over Karnataka Choice in Marriage and Prevention and Prohibition of Crimes in the Name of Honour and Tradition Bill, 2026
Bharatiya Janata Party and Community Groups Criticize Proposed Law
Bengaluru: The Karnataka government’s proposed “honour killing” prevention bill has sparked a major political controversy in the state. The government says the legislation is aimed at protecting inter-caste couples and preventing violence committed in the name of tradition and family honour. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and several community-based groups have strongly criticized the move.
Government’s Stand
According to the state government, the bill seeks to create a clear legal framework to address crimes committed against couples who choose to marry outside their caste. Officials argue that while existing criminal laws punish murder and assault, they do not specifically address organized social pressure, intimidation, and violence carried out in the name of “honour.”
The proposed law reportedly includes stricter punishments for offenders and provisions to ensure protection and support for threatened couples.
Opposition and Community Concerns
The BJP and some community organizations have questioned the necessity and scope of the bill. Critics argue that existing provisions under criminal law are sufficient to deal with murder and violence. They also claim that the bill focuses only on inter-caste marriages and does not address interfaith marriages, raising concerns about selective application.
Some leaders have described the proposal as unnecessary and politically motivated, warning that it could deepen social divisions rather than resolve them.
Broader Social Debate
Legal experts suggest that if enacted, the bill could send a strong message in favor of individual choice and constitutional rights. At the same time, opponents fear it may lead to further polarization within communities.
As the debate continues, the bill is expected to be discussed extensively in the state assembly, where amendments and clarifications may be introduced before any final decision is made.
