NSA’s Utah Data Center in Bluffdale, Utah—an expansive, highly secure facility that goes well beyond typical data centers in both scale and capability.

Quick Facts About the Utah Data Center (NSA)
• Name and Purpose
Officially known as the “Intelligence Community Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative Data Center,” this facility is operated by the NSA to support national cybersecurity efforts and intelligence collection—though its precise mission remains classified.
• Scale and Cost
The complex spans approximately 1.5 million square feet, with a 100,000-square-foot data hall. The remainder houses support, logistics, and administrative space. The facility’s construction cost is estimated between $1.5 to $2 billion, with additional expenses for hardware and operations.
• Incredible Energy and Cooling Needs
Power demand is around 65 megawatts—enough to energize about 65,000 homes—and cooling requires over 1.5 million gallons of water per day. Annual electricity costs are estimated at $40 million.
• Storage Capacity—How Big Is “Secret”?
Official capacity figures are classified, but estimates vary widely:
• Whistleblower William Binney suggested the center could handle 5 zettabytes of data, equivalent to 1.25 trillion DVDs.
• Forbes analysis of blueprints places capacity between 3–12 exabytes, noting future expansion potential.
• One source claims the facility holds “a few yottabytes.”
In short, the numbers are speculative—but it’s clear this center was built for massive, possibly unprecedented data storage and scalability.
• Reason for Location in Utah
The site was selected for its cheap electricity, access to major power infrastructure, open terrain conducive to security, cold climate for easier cooling, and proximity to the Utah National Guard’s Camp Williams. Political and economic considerations also played a role.
