Éliphas Lévi’s writings strongly influenced later Occult, Hermetic, and Esoteric traditions. However, the ideas presented in these works are not considered scientifically proven facts by mainstream science; they are mainly studied as philosophical, religious, historical, and symbolic writings.

Éliphas Lévi (1810–1875)

Éliphas Lévi was a French writer, a former Roman Catholic priest who later became an occult thinker and mystic scholar. His real name was Alphonse Louis Constant.

Key Facts

* 📅 Born: 8 February 1810, Paris, France
* ⚰️ Died: 31 May 1875, Paris, France
* 📚 He wrote several books on magic, mysticism, Kabbalah, symbolism, and spiritual philosophy.

Relationship with Baphomet

Éliphas Lévi’s most famous contribution was his illustration of Baphomet, which he presented in his book “Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie” (1854–1856), later translated as “Transcendental Magic: Its Doctrine and Ritual.”

The image included:

* 🐐 A goat-like head
* 🪽 Wings
* ⚖️ A combination of masculine and feminine elements
* 🔥 Fire and 🌙 Moon symbols

However, for Lévi, Baphomet did not directly represent “Satan.” He viewed it as a symbol of the balance of opposites, such as:

* Light and darkness
* Male and female principles
* Physical and spiritual forces

He used it as a philosophical and symbolic representation of harmony between opposing forces.

Influence

His ideas had a major influence on later:

* Occult studies
* Western esotericism
* Hermetic traditions
* Tarot and mystical symbolism

Later, the Baphomet image created by Lévi was associated by some people with Satanism and conspiracy theories, although Lévi’s own interpretation was more philosophical and symbolic rather than a literal representation of evil.
