Jellyfish are not completely immortal, but some species have an amazing ability to return to an earlier stage of life after becoming adults.
The most famous species is Turritopsis dohrnii, often called the “Immortal Jellyfish.” When it is injured, starving, or under stress, it can transform its adult body back into a young polyp stage. It can then grow into an adult jellyfish again.
This process is called transdifferentiation, in which the jellyfish’s cells change from one type into another and help rebuild its body.
However, this does not mean jellyfish can never die. They can still die because of:
* Predators, such as fish and sea turtles
* Diseases or infections
* Pollution and environmental changes
* Severe injuries or lack of food
