IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilization — a medical procedure used to help individuals or couples conceive a child. Here’s a basic overview of how it works:

Key Steps in IVF:
1. Ovarian Stimulation: Hormones are given to the person producing eggs (usually the woman) to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.
2. Egg Retrieval: Eggs are collected from the ovaries using a minor surgical procedure.
3. Sperm Collection: A sperm sample is collected from a partner or donor.
4. Fertilization: The eggs and sperm are combined in a lab dish. In some cases, a single sperm is injected directly into the egg (ICSI – Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection).
5. Embryo Culture: The fertilized eggs (embryos) are grown in the lab for a few days.
6. Embryo Transfer: One or more healthy embryos are selected and transferred into the uterus.
7. Pregnancy Test: About 10–14 days later, a blood test determines if pregnancy has occurred.

Who Might Use IVF?
• Couples with fertility issues (e.g., blocked fallopian tubes, low sperm count)
• Women with ovulation disorders or endometriosis
• Older women with reduced fertility
• Same-sex couples or single individuals using donor eggs/sperm
• Those using a surrogate
