🇮🇳 India’s Incredible Journey: From Gondwana to the Himalayas
India was not always where it is today. Millions of years ago, the Indian landmass was part of a much larger ancient supercontinent—and it eventually made an extraordinary journey across the Earth.
Around 300–200 million years ago, most of Earth’s major landmasses were joined together in a giant supercontinent called Pangaea.
Its southern portion was known as Gondwana, which included land that would eventually become parts of modern-day India, Africa, Antarctica, Australia, South America and Madagascar.
🌍 When India broke away
As Earth’s tectonic plates slowly moved, Gondwana began to break apart.
The Indian landmass eventually separated from the surrounding continental blocks and became part of the Indian Plate. It then began moving northward across the ancient ocean.
For millions of years, India continued its journey north.
🚀 A continent on the move
The Indian Plate travelled thousands of kilometres before reaching the Eurasian Plate.
Around 50–60 million years ago, the Indian Plate collided with the Eurasian Plate.
That enormous collision changed the geography of the planet.
The Earth’s crust was compressed and pushed upward, eventually creating the Himalayas—one of the greatest mountain systems on Earth.
🏔️ The Himalayas are a product of collision
So, in a very real geological sense, the Himalayas are the result of India crashing into Asia.
And the story is not over.
The Indian Plate is still moving northward and continues to interact with the Eurasian Plate. This ongoing movement is one reason the Himalayan region remains highly active, with frequent earthquakes and continuing geological changes.
🇮🇳 Was India once part of Africa?
There is an important distinction.
It is not scientifically accurate to say that India simply broke away from Africa.
Instead, India and Africa were both parts of the ancient Gondwana supercontinent. Their geological histories were connected, but the Indian Plate followed its own complex path as Gondwana fragmented.
🌏 From Pangaea to modern India
The journey can be simplified like this:
Pangaea → Gondwana → breakup of Gondwana → Indian Plate moves north → collision with Eurasia → formation of the Himalayas
What looks like a permanent map of the world today is actually the result of hundreds of millions of years of movement.
India is not just a country on a map. Geologically, it is a piece of ancient Earth that travelled thousands of kilometres before reaching its present position—and its journey is still continuing. 🌍🇮🇳
