In 2025, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) reported that India ranked number 1 globally in the total number of doping violations for the third consecutive year, meaning Indian athletes had the highest recorded cases of banned-substance positivity tests in the world according to the latest WADA annual testing figures. India’s National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) conducted over 7,100 doping tests in 2024, with 260 positive cases, giving the country a 3.6 % positivity rate, which was the highest among major testing nations — significantly more than any other country, including France, Italy, the United States and others. This top ranking has raised concerns internationally as India prepares to host major sporting events such as the 2030 Commonwealth Games and pursues a bid for the 2036 Olympics.
