GST (Goods and Services Tax) came into force in India on 1 J
GST (Goods and Services Tax) came into force in India on 1 July 2017 and was introduced as "One Nation, One Tax". It was one of the largest tax reform systems in the country so far. But this improvement was correct or wrong - it is necessary to evaluate it on the basis of both advantages and disadvantages. Why was it right to apply GST? (Benefits)
1. One Nation, One Tax • Earlier every state had its own separate tax - VAT, Sales Tax, Entry Tax, Octroi etc. • GST made a uniform tax system by mixing all taxes in one.
2. transparency and simplicity in tax • Traders no longer have to struggle with different laws of every state. • There is only one rate and the same process in the entire country, which promoted honest business.
3. Prevention on black money • GST system is digital-the record of every transaction remains with the government. • Business without bills reduced in cash.
4. Transport and logistics become easy • Earlier, trucks had to stay for tax to pay taxes on the borders of the states. These obstacles ended after GST.
5. Benefits of consumer (in some cases) • Earlier there was a tax layering on the goods (tax on tax). • GST removed it and reduced effective tax rate - especially on mobile, LED, household items etc. ❌ Why was GST called wrong? (Damage and challenges)
1. burden increased on small traders • Small shopkeepers and traders who were not earlier in tax networks now have to deal with returns, billing and digital tax system.
2. Repeated changes and complex rate structure • GST was called "simple", but has four rate slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) and many exceptions. • It is also difficult for small businessmen to fill GSTR forms every month.
3. Cut in the freedom of states • Earlier states used to decide their tax on their own, now everything is in the hands of GST Council. • This has caused revenue loss to many states, especially whose tax base was high.
4. The technical side of the system was initially weak • In the early years, the GSTN (GST NETWORK) portal used to crash frequently, causing a lot of trouble to the traders.
📊 Conclusion: was GST right or wrong? Aspect This was the right step to unite the economy of the country in the long term. In the short term - this proved to be a setback for small businesses, farmers and local traders. In today's situation, the GST system is gradually stabilizing, but simplicity and improvement still need.
🧠 What could have been done better? • The same simple tax rate could be kept • Low compliance category for small traders • Strengthen GSTN portal from the beginning • Better funding systems for loss-protection to states
