Global warming (climate change) is causing serious and increasing problems on Earth. It is mainly driven by human activities such as burning fossil fuels, which release greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane. As a result, the Earth’s average temperature has already risen by about 1.1°C–1.4°C above pre-industrial levels, with recent years (2023–2025) being the hottest on record. According to scientific organizations like NASA, NOAA, and IPCC, these impacts are already visible and will worsen if emissions are not reduced.
The major effects include more intense heatwaves, increasing the risk of heatstroke, fatigue, and deaths—especially among vulnerable populations. Rising temperatures are also causing glaciers and ice sheets to melt, leading to sea-level rise (about 20–25 cm since 1880), which threatens coastal cities with flooding and saltwater intrusion. Extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, cyclones, and wildfires are becoming more frequent and severe, disrupting ecosystems and human life. Agriculture is heavily affected, with declining crop yields (like wheat, rice, and maize), increasing food insecurity and malnutrition risks. Biodiversity is also under threat, as many species are forced to migrate or face extinction, while coral reefs are being damaged due to ocean warming.
In addition, climate change is impacting human health by increasing heat-related illnesses, spreading mosquito-borne diseases like malaria and dengue, and worsening air pollution. Water scarcity is another growing concern, as glaciers shrink and evaporation increases, affecting rivers and freshwater availability. In countries like India, these impacts are particularly severe, with rising heatwaves, irregular monsoons, melting Himalayan glaciers, and threats to agriculture and livelihoods.
Although the situation is serious, it can still be improved by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and limiting global warming to around 1.5°C, as targeted in the Paris Agreement. Individuals can help by saving energy, planting trees, reducing plastic use, and relying more on renewable energy sources like solar and wind. Immediate and collective action is essential to prevent the worst future impacts.
