Fraud Risk Under the Name of “Objection/Correction” in Online Exams: How to Identify Scams
The answer-key, objection and correction processes in online Central or State examinations are generally legitimate and officially regulated. However, fraudsters may exploit these procedures to deceive candidates. Scammers may pose as examination authorities or officials and contact candidates, claiming that there is an error in their answers, marks or results that can be corrected in exchange for money.
In such cases, candidates may be asked to transfer money to a personal UPI ID, bank account or other private payment channel. Fraudsters may also use fake websites or links to collect money in the name of an “objection fee” or “correction fee.” Platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram may also be used to impersonate examination officials and target candidates.
One of the strongest warning signs is when someone claims that “your marks or result can be changed internally if you pay money.” Requests for sensitive information such as OTPs, UPI PINs, ATM PINs, banking passwords or other confidential credentials are also serious red flags.
However, it is important to understand that not every objection fee is fraudulent. Many examination authorities legitimately charge a prescribed fee for submitting objections to an answer key. Different examinations may have different official objection fees. Therefore, the mere fact that a fee is being charged does not automatically mean that the process is fraudulent.
The most important precaution is to follow only the procedure provided on the official website and in the official notification of the relevant examination authority. Payments should be made only through the official examination portal. Candidates should avoid transferring money to personal UPI IDs, private bank accounts or individuals contacting them through WhatsApp or other messaging platforms.
How to Protect Yourself from Examination Fraud
* Carefully read the notification published on the official examination website.
* Do not immediately trust unknown links received through WhatsApp or Telegram.
* Do not make payments to personal UPI IDs or private bank accounts.
* Never share OTPs, UPI PINs, ATM PINs or banking passwords with anyone.
* Do not believe claims that marks or results can be changed in exchange for money.
* Check the website domain carefully before making any payment or entering personal information.
* Verify any suspicious message, phone call or website directly with the relevant examination authority.
