Earth’s 23.5° Tilt and the Change of Seasons
The Earth is tilted at approximately 23.5° on its axis. This tilt is an important feature of our planet because it is responsible for the different seasons experienced on Earth. Many people think that Earth’s tilt continuously changes, but this is not exactly true.
Earth’s main tilt remains approximately 23.5° throughout the year. It does not suddenly change from one season to another. What changes is Earth’s position as it revolves around the Sun in its orbit. Due to this movement, different parts of Earth receive different amounts of sunlight at different times of the year.
For example, around June 21, when it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere, the North Pole is tilted toward the Sun. In contrast, around December 21, when it is summer in the Southern Hemisphere, the South Pole is tilted toward the Sun.
There are also two times each year when neither the North Pole nor the South Pole is tilted more toward the Sun. This condition is called an equinox, during which day and night are nearly equal in length.
This can be understood with a simple example. Imagine holding a tilted pencil and walking in a circle around a room. The pencil itself remains tilted in the same way, but as you move, sometimes its upper end points more toward one side and sometimes toward another. Earth behaves in a similar way.
Therefore, Earth’s 23.5° tilt remains nearly constant, but because Earth revolves around the Sun, sometimes the North Pole and sometimes the South Pole faces more toward the Sun. This process is the main reason for seasonal changes on Earth.
