Earth, Land, Water, and the Importance of the Tropical Region
Earth is the only known planet in our solar system that supports life. The presence of water, air, land, and a suitable climate makes life possible on this planet. About 71 percent of Earth’s surface is covered by water, while approximately 29 percent is covered by land. This land forms the foundation of human civilization, agriculture, forests, industries, and natural resources.
Land is not only a place for human settlement but also the primary source of food production. Farmers cultivate crops on land to meet the food requirements of the world’s population. However, only about 10 to 12 percent of Earth’s total land area is used as cropland. The remaining land consists of forests, mountains, deserts, grasslands, ice-covered regions, and urban areas. Around 30 percent of the land surface is covered by forests, which play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance and supporting biodiversity.
Beneath the Earth’s surface, nature has created an effective system for filtering water. Sandy soil, gravel, and loamy soil allow water to pass through while removing many impurities. As water moves through layers of sand, gravel, and soil in underground aquifers, it becomes naturally cleaner. This natural filtration process helps provide groundwater, one of the most valuable freshwater resources for human life.
The region located between the Tropic of Cancer (23.5° North) and the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5° South) is known as the Tropics or the Tropical Zone. This region covers about 40 percent of the Earth’s surface and contains approximately 36 percent of the world’s land area, equal to around 53.6 million square kilometers. The Tropics are home to most of the world’s rainforests, rich biodiversity, and highly productive agricultural lands.
Approximately 107 countries and territories are located wholly or partially within the tropical region. India is one of the most important tropical countries, as the Tropic of Cancer passes through its central part. Because sunlight strikes this region more directly throughout the year, the climate remains generally warm, making it highly favorable for agriculture and diverse ecosystems.
Today, increasing population, rapid urbanization, deforestation, and environmental pollution are placing immense pressure on land resources. Soil degradation, declining groundwater levels, and excessive exploitation of natural resources have become major global concerns. Therefore, the conservation of land, water, forests, and other natural resources is essential for sustainable development.
