Avi Loeb is an Israeli-American astrophysicist and cosmologist best known for his work on black holes, the early universe, and the search for extraterrestrial life. He served as Chair of Harvard University’s Astronomy Department and founded projects focused on studying unusual space objects and possible technological signs of life beyond Earth.
He became especially famous after proposing that the interstellar object ʻOumuamua might have been artificial rather than a natural asteroid or comet. That idea generated major debate: Loeb argued it deserved serious investigation, while many other scientists said there was not enough evidence and favored natural explanations.
He also leads the Galileo Project, which aims to search scientifically for evidence of extraterrestrial technological objects using observations and data rather than speculation.
