Artificial sugar, also called Artificial Sweeteners, is a type of sweetener that is chemically made. It tastes sweet but has very few or almost no calories. Common examples are Saccharin, Aspartame, Sucralose, and Cyclamate. These are often used in sugar-free biscuits, cold drinks, and diabetic foods. The main purpose is that diabetic people can enjoy sweetness without sugar and it also helps in controlling weight.
Artificial sweeteners do not directly raise blood sugar, so taking them in small amounts is generally considered safe. However, using too much or over a long period can affect the body’s metabolism, reduce insulin sensitivity, and increase hunger. This can indirectly increase the risk of diabetes, especially if a person has a poor lifestyle.
Regarding cancer, studies so far show that normal amounts of artificial sweeteners do not cause cancer, but very high amounts, daily long-term use, or excessive use in children may affect the gut and hormone system, increasing potential risk.
In reality, the main problem is not just artificial sugar, but excessive sweet foods, junk food, cold drinks, lack of exercise, and obesity, which together increase the risk of diabetes and cancer.
Safer alternatives:
• Small amounts of jaggery or honey
• Natural sweetness from fruits
• Best approach: gradually reduce the habit of eating too much sweet
This explains artificial sugar in simple and safe terms.
