Alkaline Water: Is It Safe? Benefits, Risks, and Scientific Facts

Alkaline water has become increasingly popular due to claims that it improves health, boosts energy, and prevents diseases. But what does science actually say? Understanding what alkaline water is and how it affects the body can help separate facts from myths.

What Is Alkaline Water?

Alkaline water is water with a pH higher than 7, making it basic (alkaline) rather than acidic.

pH Scale

* pH 0–6.9: Acidic
* pH 7: Neutral (pure water)
* pH 7.1–14: Alkaline (Base)

Most drinking water has a pH between 6.5 and 8.5, while alkaline water typically has a pH of 8.0 to 9.5.

Is Alkaline Water Safe to Drink?

Yes. For most healthy people, alkaline water is generally considered safe when:

* Its pH is between 8.0 and 9.5.
* It is clean, safe, and free from harmful contaminants.
* It is consumed in normal daily amounts.

Are the Health Benefits Scientifically Proven?

Many advertisements claim that alkaline water can detoxify the body, slow aging, improve digestion, and even prevent diseases. However, current scientific evidence does not strongly support these claims for the general population.

Some small studies suggest possible benefits in specific situations, but larger, high-quality research is still needed.

Importantly, the human body naturally maintains a stable blood pH through the kidneys and lungs. Drinking alkaline water does not normally change the body’s blood pH.

Possible Risks

Although alkaline water is generally safe, excessive consumption over long periods may cause:

* Reduced stomach acidity, which may affect digestion in some people.
* Gas, bloating, or stomach discomfort.
* Problems for people with certain kidney disorders, especially if mineral balance is affected.

People with serious kidney disease or those taking medications that affect mineral levels should consult a healthcare professional before regularly drinking alkaline water.

Who Can Drink It?

Most healthy adults can safely drink alkaline water in moderation. However, people with chronic kidney disease or other serious medical conditions should seek medical advice before making it their primary source of drinking water.
