According to current science, scientists cannot create a large natural earthquake whenever and wherever they want. 🌍
However, some human activities can cause small—and sometimes noticeable—earthquakes. These are called induced earthquakes. Examples include:
* Large dams and reservoirs: The weight and pressure of huge amounts of water can sometimes affect existing faults underground.
* Oil and gas extraction or underground wastewater injection: These activities can change pressure beneath the Earth’s surface and trigger earthquakes.
* Mining: Removing large amounts of rock can alter underground stress.
* Some geothermal energy projects: Injecting water deep underground can cause small earthquakes.
* Underground nuclear tests: They can produce strong ground vibrations, but this is not the same as creating a controlled natural earthquake.
Scientists cannot currently stop, start, or deliberately create a major natural earthquake in a specific city. Natural earthquakes involve enormous energy stored in Earth’s tectonic plates, and controlling that energy is beyond today’s technology.
