A Different Perspective on Beauty in 19th-Century Persia

Beauty standards in 19th-century Persia were quite different from those of today.

One of the prominent women of the royal Qajar court was Fatemeh Khanum (Ismat al-Dawla), the daughter of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar.

During that era, thick, connected eyebrows were considered a sign of beauty. Even a faint line of hair above the upper lip, resembling a mustache, could be associated with attractiveness and elegance in some women. Such features can also be seen in royal photographs and artwork from the period.

This history reminds us that there is no single, permanent standard of beauty. The definition of beauty changes with time, place, culture, and social traditions.

What may seem unusual to us today was once considered the ideal of beauty and attractiveness.

Beauty keeps changing—with time, culture, and perspective.😅
