Humans breathe in oxygen (O₂) and breathe out carbon dioxide (CO₂) because our cells need oxygen to produce energy.
How it works:
1. We inhale → Oxygen enters the lungs
Air travels through the nose or mouth → windpipe → lungs → tiny air sacs called alveoli.
2. Oxygen enters the blood
Oxygen passes from the alveoli into the bloodstream. Hemoglobin in red blood cells carries it around the body.
3. Cells use oxygen to make energy
Cells use oxygen to break down nutrients such as glucose and produce energy (ATP).
4. Carbon dioxide is produced
During this process, CO₂ and water are produced as by-products.
Glucose Oxygen → Energy CO₂ Water
5. CO₂ travels back to the lungs
The blood carries CO₂ from the cells back to the lungs.
6. We exhale → CO₂ leaves the body 🌬️
Simple flow:
Air → Lungs → O₂ → Blood → Cells → Energy CO₂ → Blood → Lungs → Exhaled air
