Meta’s AI strategy is facing fresh scrutiny after Mark Zuckerberg’s wealth fell by approximately $10.9 billion to $246.7 billion as Meta shares declined on September 28, 2026. Over just two trading days, his fortune reportedly dropped by nearly $19 billion.
Meta is investing heavily in AI infrastructure and plans to launch the Meta Enterprise Platform, offering tools such as Muse, Meta Business Agent, Muse API, and Muse Code to businesses and developers.
To lead this new enterprise AI division, Meta has appointed MongoDB CEO Chirantan “CJ” Desai as Chief Enterprise Platform Officer. The move signals Meta’s ambition to expand beyond its advertising-driven business and compete in the enterprise AI market.
However, investors are increasingly focused on one key question: Can Meta turn its massive AI spending into meaningful revenue and profit?
According to the Financial Times, Meta could spend up to $145 billion in capital expenditure in 2026, with a significant portion directed toward AI infrastructure. The market is now watching whether Meta can successfully convert:
AI investment → Users → Businesses → Revenue → Profit
The timing of the announcement was also notable. #Meta shares fell on the day it revealed its enterprise #AI expansion, while MongoDB shares dropped nearly 18% following Desai’s departure.
This does not necessarily mean the market has rejected Meta’s AI strategy. Instead, it highlights growing sensitivity around the cost of AI investments and the uncertainty surrounding future returns.
Meta’s biggest challenge is no longer just building powerful AI models. Zuckerberg must prove that Meta’s AI infrastructure and products can deliver real business value, attract large-scale adoption, create new revenue streams, and justify the company’s enormous spending.
