When you send even a tiny message — like:

“Hi”

an entire digital infrastructure starts working behind the scenes, and electricity is consumed at every step.



1. Phone Electricity

First, your phone uses power for:

* screen ON
* keyboard input
* CPU processing
* network antenna
* Wi-Fi or mobile signal

If it is an AI app:

* extra GPU/NPU processing may also happen.



2. Mobile Tower / Wi-Fi Router

While sending the message:

all consume electricity.

6. Cooling Systems

Servers generate a lot of heat.

So data centers run:

* industrial AC plants
* liquid cooling systems
* giant fans
* chilled water systems

In many data centers, cooling alone uses a large portion of total electricity.



7. Return Data Transmission

The response then travels back:

server → internet → tower/router → phone

More network electricity is used during this return trip.



8. Screen Rendering

Finally, your phone:

* displays text
* vibrates
* plays notification sounds

which again consumes battery power.



Approximate Energy Usage

A simple text message:

* uses very little energy

But:

* AI-generated replies

* video streaming

consume much more electricity.
