Andrej Karpathy has officially joined #Anthropic in May 2026. He confirmed it publicly, and multiple outlets reported that he joined Anthropic’s “pretraining” team, which works on the large-scale training behind Claude models.
Before this, #Karpathy was known for:
being one of the founding members of OpenAI
leading AI and Autopilot vision at Tesla
creating the AI education startup Eureka Labs
popularizing terms like “vibe coding” in the AI community.
According to reports, he said the next few years for frontier LLMs will be “especially formative,” which is why he wanted to return deeply into R&D work.
