Sarah Baartman was a Khoikhoi woman from South Africa, born around 1789. In 1810, she was taken to Europe under the false promise of work and a better life. There, she was displayed in public shows and given the offensive name “Hottentot Venus,” where people mocked her body for entertainment.
She was later exploited in France, where scientists also studied and objectified her body based on racist ideas of the time. She died young in 1815, likely due to harsh living conditions and exploitation.
After nearly two centuries, her remains were finally returned to South Africa in 2002 and given a respectful burial.
Today, her story is widely remembered as a powerful symbol of racism, colonial exploitation, and the violation of human dignity.
