Humans breathe oxygen because our body is designed to produce energy most efficiently using it.

1. The body’s “energy factory”
Inside our cells, a process called cellular respiration takes place.
In this process, glucose (from food) oxygen → ATP (energy).

👉 Without oxygen, the body can still produce a small amount of energy, but it is very inefficient.

2. Why oxygen is special

* Oxygen is highly reactive → it helps release energy quickly
* It binds easily with hemoglobin in blood, so it can be transported efficiently
* It supports a highly efficient energy production system

3. Why other gases don’t work

* Nitrogen (N₂) → very inert, does not react, so no energy production
* Carbon dioxide (CO₂) → already a waste product, not useful for energy
* Methane or other gases → human enzymes are not designed to use them

👉 In short, our body is biologically “built” for oxygen.

4. Evolution reason
Millions of years ago, oxygen levels in Earth’s atmosphere increased.
Organisms that could use oxygen survived better because it produces much more energy.
This eventually led to complex life forms like humans.
