An MRI machine can be extremely dangerous if proper safety rules are ignored, but under normal supervised conditions, MRI scans are generally very safe.

🧲 Why can an MRI be dangerous?

MRI uses a very powerful magnetic field—often 1.5 or 3 Tesla, which is tens of thousands of times stronger than Earth’s magnetic field.

The biggest risks are:

* 🧲 Projectile effect: Ferromagnetic objects such as oxygen cylinders, tools, scissors, or some wheelchairs can be violently pulled toward the magnet.
* ❤️ Implants: Some pacemakers, aneurysm clips, cochlear implants, and other devices may be unsafe or require special MRI conditions.
* 🔥 Burns: Conductive materials, wires, certain patches, or improperly positioned cables can heat during scanning.
* 👂 Hearing damage: The machine produces very loud knocking sounds, so hearing protection is normally provided.
* 💉 Contrast-agent reactions: Some MRI scans use gadolinium-based contrast agents, which can rarely cause allergic reactions and require special consideration in severe kidney disease.
* 🧲 The magnet doesn’t simply switch off: Many MRI scanners have a continuously active main magnetic field. An emergency “quench” can rapidly remove the magnetic field, but this is a specialized emergency procedure and can create other hazards.

⚠️ A particularly important point

A normal-looking metal object can become a high-speed projectile near an MRI scanner. This is why MRI rooms have strict screening procedures and why you should never take metal objects or unapproved equipment into the scan room.

So, the MRI itself isn’t usually dangerous to a properly screened patient; the combination of the powerful magnet, certain implants, and metallic objects creates the major hazards.
