Indian Stock Market Becomes Asia’s Least-Favoured Market as Global Investor Concerns Rise

New Delhi: India’s stock market is facing growing scepticism among global investors. According to a Bloomberg report citing a Bank of America fund-manager survey, Indian equities have become Asia’s least-favoured stock market, overtaking Indonesia.

The survey signals a significant deterioration in investor sentiment toward Indian stocks. Around 98 fund managers managing approximately $272 billion in assets participated in the survey, with 32% reporting an underweight position in Indian equities.

High Valuations and Weak Earnings Raise Concerns

Investors have expressed concerns over high stock valuations, weaker-than-expected corporate earnings and relatively limited exposure to the global artificial-intelligence investment boom.

India’s expensive valuations have become a particular concern as investors compare the country with other Asian markets that offer lower valuations and different growth opportunities.

Foreign Investor Sentiment Under Pressure

The negative sentiment comes at a challenging time for Indian equities. Persistent selling by foreign investors, concerns over earnings growth and global economic uncertainties have added pressure to the market.

The latest assessment does not mean that India’s economy is necessarily in decline or that Indian stocks will inevitably fall. Rather, it reflects the current positioning and sentiment of a group of international fund managers.

Still, being identified as Asia’s least-favoured equity market highlights the growing challenge India faces in maintaining its appeal among global investors.
