Linwei Ding (also known as Leon Ding), a former Google software engineer.
He was sentenced on September 1, 2026, to 12 months minus one day in U.S. federal prison after being convicted of stealing Google’s confidential AI technology.
What did he do?
Ding joined Google in 2019 and worked on technology used in Google's AI data centers.
Prosecutors said he secretly copied more than 2,000 pages of confidential information.
The information included details about Google's TPUs, GPUs, networking systems and AI supercomputing infrastructure.
He allegedly transferred the information to benefit two Chinese technology companies.
He was originally convicted on both trade-secret theft and economic-espionage charges.
But in August 2026, a judge overturned the economic-espionage convictions, saying prosecutors hadn't sufficiently proved that Ding knew or intended his actions to benefit the Chinese government. His trade-secret theft conviction remained.
Why did he actually go to prison?
The key issue wasn't simply that he left Google or worked with Chinese companies. He illegally took Google's confidential intellectual property.
The judge ultimately sentenced him to almost one year in prison, plus two years of supervised release, and ordered him to pay more than $198,000 in restitution to Google and a $2,500 fine.
