Ex-Google Engineer Sentenced for Stealing Google’s AI Secrets
Former Google software engineer Linwei Ding (Leon Ding) has been sentenced to nearly one year in federal prison after being convicted of stealing confidential technology related to Google’s advanced AI infrastructure.
Prosecutors said Ding secretly copied hundreds of confidential files and thousands of pages containing information about Google’s AI supercomputing systems, including TPU and GPU infrastructure, networking technology and software used to train large AI models. He uploaded the information to a personal cloud account while secretly pursuing business opportunities with China-based technology companies.
A U.S. federal jury convicted Ding in January 2026. In September 2026, a federal judge sentenced him to 12 months minus one day in prison, describing the theft as a serious and systematic effort to take Google’s proprietary technology.
The case highlights how AI technology and computing infrastructure have become critical national-security and economic assets, making protection of trade secrets increasingly important in the global AI race.
