If humans had a little more wisdom and honesty, perhaps AI would not have to make decisions about our future.
One day, this may happen…
You will find yourself standing alone at a huge intersection. Everything around you will be silent. The traffic signal will be red, but there won’t be a single vehicle anywhere in sight.
You will wait for a few moments.
Then, suddenly, despite the red light, your feet will begin moving toward the sidewalk. You will think—if there is no car anywhere, what harm could there be in breaking this rule?
As soon as you take a few steps forward…
Suddenly, a car will come speeding from a distance.
Honk!
You will be startled.
Your illusion will be shattered.
But then, a robotic police officer standing by the roadside will walk toward you.
It will scan your identity and, without any argument, say—
“You have violated a traffic regulation. Come with us.”
A short while later, you will find yourself in a courtroom where there is no human judge sitting before you.
On a massive screen, a virtual AI judge will appear.
It will ask you—
“You knew the rule. Why did you violate it anyway?”
You will remain silent for a few moments.
Then you will quietly say—
“I don’t know… At that moment, I saw something.”
The AI will ask—
“What?”
You will say—
“Some blurry images from a past life… Some faces… People who loved me, who cared about me. I saw my past reflected in their eyes. For a few moments, I felt as though I wasn’t standing in this life, but in another one.”
Silence will fill the courtroom.
The AI will analyze the signals coming from your brain.
A few seconds later, its voice will change—
“Abnormal activity resembling previous-memory patterns has been detected in the subject’s brain.”
The AI judge will turn toward the robotic police officers and order—
“Take the subject to the surveillance chamber.”
Then another command will follow—
“Disable the memory. Maintain continuous surveillance to prevent the recurrence of such abnormal memories in the future.”
You will be taken away.
You will turn back and look at the AI judge one last time.
And perhaps, in that moment, you will realize—
The biggest question of the future will not be how intelligent AI becomes.
The biggest question will be—
When AI becomes more intelligent than us, how much of our freedom, our memories, and our humanity will we have already placed in its hands?
Because the day machines begin making our decisions for us, the danger will not simply be that AI controls us.
The real danger will be that perhaps we won’t even remember
that there was once a time when we made our own decisions.
