Satanic Temple Unveils Goat-Headed Statue in Detroit
On July 25, 2015, The Satanic Temple unveiled a nearly 9-foot-tall bronze statue of Baphomet in Detroit, Michigan. The statue weighs approximately one ton.
The statue features:
* 🐐 A goat’s head and horns
* 👤 A human-like body
* 🪽 Wings
* 🔻 An inverted pentagram
* 👧👦 Two children standing beside the figure
What was the purpose of the statue?
The statue was created in connection with The Satanic Temple’s effort to have a Baphomet monument placed at the Oklahoma State Capitol, alongside a Ten Commandments monument.
The group argued that if government property could display one religious monument, other religious or philosophical groups should also have the right to display their own symbols under principles of religious freedom and equal treatment.
Is Baphomet actually Satan?
Not necessarily. The Satanic Temple does not generally describe Satan as a literal supernatural being to be worshipped. Instead, it presents Satan as a symbolic figure representing individual freedom, personal autonomy, and resistance to arbitrary authority.
Therefore, describing the Baphomet statue simply as “a statue of Satan” does not fully explain its meaning. It is also part of The Satanic Temple’s broader religious symbolism and its arguments about freedom of religion and government neutrality.
