🔐 QR Code, Barcode & GST: What They Really Prove

A barcode, QR code, or GSTIN alone does not prove that a product is genuine.

* Barcode / GTIN: Identifies a product. GS1 standards are commonly used for product identification.
* QR Code: Can provide product information or connect to a verification service.
* GSTIN: Identifies a registered taxpayer/business for GST purposes. It does not authenticate every product sold by that business.
* Unique Product ID: Can help identify an individual product and detect repeated or unusual scans.
* Batch/Lot Number: Can be checked against the manufacturer’s records where such a system exists.

⚠️ Important

A fraudster can copy a genuine barcode, QR code, or GSTIN and put it on a counterfeit product.

A QR code leading to a company’s website does not automatically mean the product is genuine. The website and its verification system also need to be trustworthy.

✅ Stronger Verification

A more reliable anti-counterfeit system can combine:

GST information + GS1/GTIN + Unique Product ID + Batch Number + QR Code + Verification History

The key question is not:

“Does the QR code work?”

It is:

“Can the specific product and its information be independently verified?”
