Meta Faces $567 Million Penalty in New Mexico
New Mexico, USA — August 2026: A New Mexico court has ordered Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, to pay $567 million into a fund addressing the impact of its platforms on children and teenagers.
The case focused on allegations that Meta’s platforms can contribute to harmful effects on young users. Meta has disputed the allegations and said it plans to appeal the decision.
The new penalty comes after an earlier $375 million amount in the same case, bringing the total financial judgment to approximately $942 million.
The case is being closely watched because similar lawsuits and regulatory actions involving social-media companies and children’s online safety are taking place across the United States.
