Epidermodysplasia Verruciformis: Causes, Symptoms and How It Develops
Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) is an extremely rare genetic skin disorder that makes a person unusually susceptible to certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections.
What Causes EV?
EV is primarily associated with inherited mutations in genes involved in the body’s ability to control certain HPV infections. Two important genes linked to EV are TMC6 (EVER1) and TMC8 (EVER2).
Because of these genetic changes, the immune system and skin cells have difficulty controlling particular types of HPV. This can lead to persistent skin infections and the development of unusual wart-like or flat lesions.
Is EV Contagious?
EV itself is not a contagious disease. A person does not develop EV simply by touching or living with someone who has it.
However, the HPV types associated with EV can be transmitted between people. In individuals with the genetic susceptibility to EV, these infections may produce persistent and extensive skin lesions.
Common Symptoms
People with EV may develop:
* Flat, wart-like lesions
* Scaly or reddish-brown patches
* Numerous lesions on the hands, arms, legs, face, or other exposed areas
* Lesions that may resemble skin conditions such as warts or pityriasis versicolor
Symptoms often begin during childhood or adolescence.
Risk of Skin Cancer
One of the most serious complications of EV is an increased risk of developing non-melanoma skin cancers, particularly on areas exposed to sunlight.
UV radiation from sunlight can contribute to the progression of some lesions. Therefore, people with EV are generally advised to have regular dermatological examinations and protect their skin from excessive UV exposure.
Treatment
There is currently no definitive cure that removes the underlying genetic cause of EV. Treatment focuses on controlling lesions and reducing complications. Depending on the situation, doctors may use treatments such as lesion removal, cryotherapy, topical medicines, or other dermatological procedures.
Regular skin examinations are particularly important because suspicious lesions may require early treatment.
