In some parts of the world, religious identity and participation in religious activities are declining. However, the situation varies significantly between different religions and countries.
According to the Pew Research Center, the share of the world’s population affiliated with a religion declined from approximately 77% in 2010 to 76% in 2020. This represents a decrease of about 1 percentage point in religious affiliation worldwide.
At the same time, the share of people with no religious affiliation—such as atheists, agnostics, or those who identify as having “no religion”—increased from approximately 23.3% to 24.2%. This represents an increase of about 0.9 percentage points. And it is expected to increase further by 2030.
