To portray Britain only as a builder of “civilization,” railways, and modern institutions is to erase the brutal reality of colonial history. The British Empire maintained its power through war, conquest, economic exploitation, racial repression, torture, collective punishment, and the strategy of “divide and rule.”
In India, British rule was associated with devastating wars, exploitative colonial policies, and catastrophic famines that caused immense human suffering and contributed to the deaths of millions. Its legacy cannot be reduced to railways and legal institutions while ignoring the hunger, violence, dispossession, and destruction experienced by colonized peoples.
In Kenya, British authorities used mass detention, forced resettlement, torture, executions, and collective punishment during the suppression of the Mau Mau uprising. Across the empire, colonial governments also relied on military force, local auxiliaries, informers, and divide-and-rule tactics to weaken and suppress liberation movements.
The most enduring legacy of the British Empire is not simply “civilization,” but a vast system of colonial domination that extracted wealth, divided societies, and used organized violence to crush resistance.
History must not be told only through the monuments and achievements of empire. It must also be told through the experiences, suffering, and resistance of the people who lived under colonial rule.
