The Spanish government has introduced a special “regularization” program to provide legal residency and work opportunities to undocumented migrants already living in Spain.
The government initially estimated that around 500,000 migrants could benefit from the program. However, more than 1.17 million people applied, making it one of Spain’s largest migrant regularization processes.
The program aims to legalize the status of people who were already living in Spain but did not have valid residence permits or work authorization.
What benefits may eligible migrants receive?
Eligible applicants may receive:

Who was eligible to apply?
The program included several key conditions:
* The person must have been in Spain before January 1, 2026.
* They must provide proof of living in Spain continuously for at least five months.
* They must not have a serious criminal record.
* Approved applicants may initially receive a limited-period residence and work permit.
Which countries had the most applicants?
A large number of applicants came from Central and South America. The leading countries included:

🇲🇦 Morocco — 13.3%
🇻🇪 Venezuela — 11.8%
🇵🇪 Peru — 8.8%
🇭🇳 Honduras — 4.9%
Around two-thirds of applicants came from Central and South America. About 22.9% came from African countries, while 8.3% came from Asian countries.
Legal Status, Not Citizenship
Spain has not granted Spanish citizenship directly to these migrants. The program is mainly intended to provide eligible people with legal residency and the right to work.
Later, depending on Spain’s immigration laws and eligibility requirements, they may apply separately for long-term residency or Spanish citizenship.
Current Situation
As of July 31, 2026, new applications under this special program have closed. The Spanish government is continuing to review and process the applications already submitted.
Conclusion: This program is not an open invitation for new migrants to enter Spain. It is designed to regularize the legal status of eligible people who were already living in the country and met the required conditions.
