Urea is one of the most widely used nitrogen fertilizers in the world. Interestingly, the same chemical compound—urea (CO(NH₂)₂)—is naturally produced in the human body and excreted through urine.
A healthy adult typically excretes around 12–20 grams of urea per day through urine. This has led many people to wonder whether human urine can be used to produce agricultural fertilizer.
The answer is both yes and no.
Human urine contains valuable plant nutrients, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Because of these nutrients, urine has been studied and, in some cases, used as a fertilizer after proper collection and treatment. Research projects in several countries have shown that treated urine can support crop growth and reduce the need for synthetic fertilizers.
However, extracting pure urea from urine is not practical on a large commercial scale. Urine is mostly water and also contains salts and other waste products. Separating and purifying urea requires significant processing, making it more expensive than industrial production methods.
Modern urea fertilizer is therefore manufactured in factories, primarily using ammonia and carbon dioxide derived from natural gas. This process produces large quantities of high-purity urea at a much lower cost.
While human urine is unlikely to replace industrial urea fertilizer, it remains a potentially useful source of plant nutrients, especially in small-scale or sustainable agricultural systems where nutrient recycling is a priority.
In summary, human urine contains urea and can contribute nutrients to plants, but the urea fertilizer used in agriculture today is almost entirely produced through industrial manufacturing rather than extracted from urine.
