Prince Rupert’s Drop is a teardrop-shaped piece of glass made by dropping molten glass into cold water. The outside cools and hardens almost instantly, while the inside cools more slowly, creating extreme internal stresses.

Its remarkable properties are:

* The rounded head is incredibly strong. It can often withstand hammer blows without breaking.
* The thin tail is extremely fragile. If the tip of the tail is chipped or snapped, the entire drop shatters instantly into tiny glass fragments.

Why does this happen?

The rapid cooling creates:

* Compressive stress on the outer surface, making the head very strong.
* Tensile stress inside the glass, storing a large amount of energy.

Breaking the tail releases this stored energy, causing cracks to race through the glass at very high speed and the entire drop to disintegrate.

Why is it important?

Scientists study Prince Rupert’s Drops to better understand:

* Tempered (toughened) glass
* Fracture mechanics (how materials crack and break)
* Internal stress in materials
* Safer glass used in cars, buildings, and electronic devices
