How Often Should You Eat Fish?

Fish is one of the healthiest foods you can include in your diet. It is an excellent source of high-quality protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and essential minerals that support overall health.

For most healthy adults, eating fish once a day is generally sufficient. Health experts also recommend eating fish at least two to three times per week as part of a balanced diet. If you enjoy eating fish every day, a serving of 100–150 grams (3.5–5 ounces) of cooked fish per day is considered appropriate for most people.

Eating fish twice a day can also be acceptable, provided your total calorie and protein intake remains balanced and you choose a variety of fish. Rotating different species helps ensure a wider range of nutrients while reducing the risk of excessive exposure to contaminants.

It is also important to choose your fish wisely. Smaller and lower-mercury fish such as salmon, sardines, tilapia, rohu, and catla are suitable for regular consumption. In contrast, large predatory fish such as shark, swordfish, and king mackerel should be eaten less frequently because they tend to contain higher levels of mercury.

Healthy cooking methods, including grilling, baking, steaming, or boiling, are generally better choices than deep-frying, as they preserve nutrients while limiting added fat.
