Many people wonder whether water can stay inside a glass in space just as it does on Earth. The answer depends on where in space the glass is located.
Inside a spacecraft such as the International Space Station (ISS), air pressure is maintained at levels similar to those on Earth. However, because astronauts experience microgravity, water does not settle at the bottom of a glass. Instead, surface tension causes the water to form floating spherical droplets that can drift through the cabin. For this reason, astronauts usually drink from sealed pouches with straws instead of ordinary glasses.
In the vacuum of outer space, the situation is very different. There is almost no atmospheric pressure, so liquid water cannot remain stable in an open glass. It would begin to boil almost immediately, even if it were cold. As it loses heat, part of the water would freeze while another part would turn into water vapor and escape into space. Therefore, an ordinary open glass of water cannot exist in the vacuum of space as it does on Earth.
In conclusion, water can only remain in a glass under controlled conditions inside a spacecraft, and even then it does not behave normally because of microgravity. In the vacuum of space, an open glass of water would quickly boil, freeze, and evaporate rather than stay inside the glass.
